Proportion before ornament
The first drawing of a room should settle height, light, and the walk through the house. Finishes come after that structure is right. A chandelier cannot rescue a ceiling that is too low, and a fabric cannot repair a corridor that goes nowhere.
At Madewell we hold the plan until the rooms feel inevitable, then we choose stone, plaster, and furniture to match.
